There are no consumer products on the market today that enable long distance haptic communication. The haptic wristband is a versatile, affordable, wearable device that extends human touch to the cloud.

EXTENDING HUMAN TOUCH INTO THE CLOUD

The importance of haptic communication became apparent to me as I traveled for business. Being away from the ones you love is tough. Sure, it's not all bad. There are plenty of things that make being away easier. I can call, email, text, even video chat any time from almost anywhere in the world. But there are difficult moments. I remember waking up in a hotel bedroom one night startled by some random noise. As I woke up, I instinctively reached toward the other side of the bed. Of course, it was empty. My wife was on the other side of the planet. She was probably awake and at work. I turned over and went back to sleep. The feeling stuck with me as I went through my day. I wrote her a quick note telling her I'd call later. 'Miss You!' A single touch would have made me feel so much better.

I know I'm not the only one feeling this way. Millions of people leave friends and family for their daily work. Some families are separated for months at a time. I've been thinking about this problem for a while and my engineering mind wants to create a solution. In the late 1800s, the telephone was starting to shape the way humans communicate. Long distance communication became a reality. By the 1950s, television was providing even more opportunity for communication. It's time for touch. I aim to bring haptic communication to life.

Each haptic link contains an array of sensors and hardware allowing the wristband's CPU to sense, communicate and simulate human touch.

FEATURE BRIEF

The Haptic Wristband provides a live, two way communication stream. It literally feels you.

Using an array of sensors and mechanical parts, the wristband provides haptic feedback directly to the wearer.

The band senses your touch and digitizes the information in real time allowing you to send signals through the cloud to others. Squeeze the wristband to squeeze the wrist of a connected band.

HAPTIC HEAT

Thermoelectric energy transfer modules placed around the band provide 3D power transfer technology.

  1. Body heat charges the band while you wear it, extending battery life.
  2. Links are individually heated or cooled, providing a wide range of haptic sensations.
  3. Links read temperature on both sides providing accurate measurements for the wearer and the ambient temperature around it.

Micro vibration and micro oscillation modules placed around the band provide the sense of motion

HAPTIC SUSPENSION

Shape Memory Alloys, Shape Memory Polymers and Mechanical Linkage Systems allow the band to bend and flex providing the feeling of opposable resistance similar to that of touching another human.

HAPTIC COMMUNICATION

Using a lightweight, open protocol, data from the band can be recorded, transferred through the cloud and played back in near real time. The open protocol provides other device manufacturers opportunity to build their own products that can participate in the haptic communication data stream.

The simplest case of band-to-band communication is flexible and extensible to other styles and shapes of bands. Using parameters built into the protocol, simple interpolation of haptic measurements provide the ability to scale up or down to the particular output. Data recorded from squeezing your wristband might be translated to a virtual tap on a connected person's shoulder. A twisting motion around the band could be configured to increase or decrease volume of your radio.

STYLE BRIEF

With the modular design of the haptic links, many configurations and styles can be created. Adapter links connect to existing watch faces to retrofit a favorite watch. A strap configuration provides more flexibility and a smoother look. The band can also be sold in a complete smartwatch configuration.

Similar to pairing with a Bluetooth headset, a user pairs the phone app with his or her wristband. Once paired, the mobile application initiates a secure, private connection between your band and others.
